Hallux valgus - what is it and what to do if it affects you?

What is hallux valgus?

Hallux valgus, or big toe malalignment, is a condition in which the big toe leans towards the other toe and the thumb moves in the opposite direction. Over time, this can result in a painful and reddened 'bone' at the big toe joint - popularly known as the 'big toe joint'. haamervarvas.

It's not just a cosmetic problem. Hallux valgus can cause constant pain, difficulty walking and make it difficult to find suitable footwear.

How does hallux valgus occur?

There are several reasons why hallux valgus occurs. In most cases it is a combination of several factors:

Inherited predisposition - if parents have hallux valgus, the risk is higher.

Wrong choice of footwear - Narrow, high-heeled shoes squeeze your toes together.

Muscle weakness and overuse of the legs - weak leg muscles or constant standing exacerbate the problem.

Existence of a flat foot.

What can you do to help?

If you notice your big toe starting to wiggle or if you start to feel pain, it's worth acting now. Early intervention can help prevent more serious deformities.

1. Check your shoes

- Choose shoes with a wide last that don't pinch your toes. Pedilux recommends wearing barefoot shoes. They don't have a thick sole, follow the shape of the foot and are very flexible. Avoid stiff soles, heeled shoes, narrow and low-toe shoes. Also check that socks and tights have adequate roominess. Avoid stockings with a strong thumb.

2. Use assistive devices

- Toe straps and silicone orthoses help keep your toes in the right position.

- Specialised hallux valgus bandages relieve pressure and pain.

3. Do the exercises

Regular gymnastics strengthens leg muscles and improves stability:

- Lift a pencil or towel with your toes.

- Practice stretching and spreading your toes.

- Make leg circles and bends.

4. Get regular foot care

A professional podiatrist can monitor the changes in the toes and alleviate the symptoms. Working with a podiatrist, it is possible to save your feet from surgery if the hallux valgus is not very advanced and does not cause pain. If necessary, a referral can be made to an orthopaedist or physiotherapist.

When should you consult a specialist?

The following signs indicate that it is time to consult a foot care specialist:

- Increasing pain in the big toe joint area

- Difficulty walking or keeping your balance

- Pressure sores, blisters or rubbing of footwear
